Submarines

I guess I’ve been away from the Navy so long that I don’t understand how a submarine can be in service since 2004 and only now making a lengthy deployment. My, my, my, how times have changed.

Story from the Day

“The return of the USS Virginia from its maiden six-month deployment on Tuesday marks the submarine’s transition from a new ship to a “workhorse” for the Navy, Capt. Michael Bernacchi said.

The Virginia was commissioned in 2004….”

  1. Submarines used to serve a strategic purpose. I don’t think they do anymore.

Manned bomber and fighter aircraft will soon go the same route, replaced by drones.

They are toys. Expensive but toys just the same. With nothing to really do, they don’t really do much.

I think they should build more of the weapons they actually might use and train more people to use them. Makes sense to me but I’m just a drifty, old ex Third Class with a bad attitude.

  2. I haven’t heard the word “drifty” in many years. But it is a very descriptive word.
