Social Security

From a comment on a Social Security story here

Before the age for collecting full social security retirement benefits is raised, again, we need to raise the age for collecting full retirement benefits for ALL public employees including law enforcement, and the congressional pension program as well. These taxpayer financed retirement programs have actually lowered the age for collecting maximum benefits. Why should pension reform be limited to working taxpayers only as it has been for the past twenty five years. After all we are all beneficiaries of longer lifespans.

I agree with Barbara Kennelly, the president of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. “Not everyone can work until they’re 70” and I would add that there is a difference between talking for a living and working for a living.

Why should working taxpayers have to wait until they are 70 to retire so public employees and members of congress can retire at 50?

  1. I know a guy started cutting grass on the public spaces in my town right out of high school. Decent pay, good vacations and benefits. No stress. Just ridin’ the mower.

At fifty, he retired with over thirty years in, at almost full pay. I always thought he was a pretty dumb guy. Joke’s on me, huh?

  2. Retiring at almost full pay is a thing of the past, no company or government can afford something like that. The unions just don’t realize it yet.
