War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

  1. JSM was a genius. A lot of his writing was very prophetic and very well reasoned. Watch out though. He wasn’t what you could call a liberal or conservative. He went wherever his reason took him.

You are sure to hate some of his stuff as much as you love other parts.

As far as patriotism is concerned, I think most people have things they would be willing to fight and die for but they might be much different than others. Look at our own Civil War. While there were states that were strongly on one side or another, there were others where near equal numbers went off to fight for both sides. Who were the real patriots?

  2. I believe there were even some blacks who fought on the Southern side.
